How do you describe your artistic style/perspective? How do you define success as an artist? What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What are some of the most important skills you draw upon to create your work? What are some of the most significant things you've learned through art-making?
My art style is probably most trying to emulate the traditional comic book style, as well as trying to incorporate different elements of realism. I enjoy drawing people the most, and I tend to find that artwork involving people is the most fascinating to me. In my opinion, an artist achieves success when they are able to make a difference in someone's life. I think the most rewarding thing about being an artist is being able to express yourself through your artwork and affect other people through that artwork. Art is a powerful thing because it can connect so many people with concepts and imagery that may not be able to be expressed properly through words. Even if an artist isn't the most technically skilled they can still reach many people, whether by making them laugh or by giving them something that they can appreciate and think about. The most significant thing I've learned through art-making is to never give up, and always practice. Practicing many different mediums and types of subjects is very important, as I think many young artists (including me) will tend to only draw certain things and not get out of their comfort zone. The Georgia O'Keefe painting I did really got me out of my comfort zone as I don't enjoy working with acrylics or landscapes, and for the most part, I think it was successful and showed my progression as an artist.

What medium was your favorite to work with? Explain why and how you were able to master the techniques associated with this medium.
My favorite medium to work with was pen and ink. I think I have a lot of problems choosing color palettes and I've never really enjoyed coloring things. Pen and ink gives me an opportunity to create a black-and-white piece. The fact that the value of pen and ink doesn't change with the pressure you apply forces you to learn how to add shading and value with techniques like hatching and stippling . I like pieces with a lot of contrast so pen and ink is a fun medium to use because often the only colors will be black and white, giving you the opportunity to create really pronounced shadows and lines. The pattern and shading techniques that we practiced in the mini-lesson before we did the final project helped me master the technique. I also have had some past experience with the medium. Overall practice in the best way to master any medium.

Discuss one project where you felt you were the least successful. Explain why you felt this way. What would you do differently to change this piece? Explain .
I think my least successful project was my watercolor final project. Watercolor is a very difficult medium for me. Often, I end up applying too much water or too many layers. The final project involved using a lot of masking fluid. It went on very uneven and I think it ended up discoloring the background. The background looks extremely muddled and gross. I also wanted to make the branch darker, but didn't spray on enough layers of paint. If I could do this project again, I would definitely be more careful with applying the masking fluid. I would also add more blue and yellow pigments to the branch. I think it would balance the background nicer if it was more varied in color or darker than it turned out in the end.

Choose 2 mini lessons that you felt were the most beneficial in your learning for that particular project. Include photos of these and explain thoroughly. Do you feel you needed more instruction for success? Explain or did you feel that the instruction given was enough to ensure success? Explain.
The two mini lessons that were the most helpful were the colored pencil magazine squares and the pen texture worksheet assignment The colored pencil magazine squares were helpful for me to practice showing different textures using Prismacolors. It also helped that I had used Prismacolors on and off for a few years before this. The pen texture worksheet helped because it showed a wide variety of actual pen strokes to copy. I think these introductory instruction worksheets were really helpful. Along with the other mini lessons in these units, I think these were enough to ensure success. The main idea of both of these mini-lessons was to force practice of many different textures and objects. I think practicing a lot of different subjects in a certain medium is the key to ensure success. |
